Whether your job is to design, train or lead you are all involved in helping others learn. The 4MAT model is a powerful and proven model for understanding how learning happens and provides a simple, open-ended method for designing training that reaches all learners.
This course will assist trainers and Learning and Development consultants in the adult learning and corporate sector to use the 4MAT method for instructional design to develop dynamic workshops and training packages. This program is a five-day training program, usually offered in a 3 day + 2-day format. By the end of day three, participants leave this training with an original training session designed using the 8 step 4MAT system, but more importantly, they gain insight into how to assess the quality of any training design. Delivered in an intimate workshop mode by a skilled facilitator, you receive individual attention over the 5 days to support your learning needs.
You’ll learn to:
- Design training for maximum retention
- Increase the conceptual clarity of your training
- Address the different ways in which people learn
- Implement the 4MAT® eight step process for designing effective training
What others have said about this training:
The 4MAT methodology is built on sound, current research on the brain and learning. It is insightful into your own behaviour, as well as providing a framework for developing effective learning. The program was constantly interesting and engaging and never involved being “talked at.
I have been running school, team and coaching workshops over the last 12 months all using the 4MAT system and without it, I just couldn’t get it done. It makes life so simple.
It just makes sense! With trainers finding it frustrating as they try to make learning “sticky” this is a clear structure that anyone doing instructional design or facilitation can use… and should!
Mastering Training Design Level 1
Day One – The Power of Connections
You will explore adult learning principles and learning style differences through the use of the Learning Type Measure assessment. This is an opportunity to connect with your personal learning preference and how this influences you in a learning setting. We examine in detail the four major identifiable learning styles and reflect how they are equally valuable. We discuss the impact of learning style on both how learners approach learning in a training environment and how trainers approach their design and delivery. We consider approaches that target the needs of all learning styles.
Day Two – The 4MAT Model
You will explore your preference for right and/or left brain processing and how this influences you in your work. We will consider the latest research on the brain and the implications of this for learning. Finally, we will explore the power of identifying the big idea behind your content as a way of improving learning impact and retention.
Day Three – The Cycle of Learning
The final day we show you how days one and two combine to create the 4MAT model and we examine each step of the 4MAT framework. You will explore the natural learning cycle and deepen your understanding of various points around the cycle and how to move the learner from one step to the next. You then use this information to design a piece of training that moves through all 8 steps of the model. Most of this day is focused on refining and critiquing your training ensuring that it is ready for implementation.

Day Four – 4MAT and Assessment
This day focuses on how to add assessment measures which provide learners with the opportunity to actively produce real work and demonstrate their knowing. You will explore how Kirkpatrick’s four levels of evaluation fit within the cycle.
